Chennai, June 8 (IANS): The PMK, the political arm of the powerful Vanniyar community, launched a June 10 protest call against online gambling in the state.
The protest march will take place at Rajarathinam playground in Egmore at 11am.
PMK Chairman and former Union Health Minister Dr Anbumani Ramadoss said in a statement that 22 people had committed suicide in the state after losing money in online gambling over the past 10 months.
According to the PMK leader, this happened after the Madras High Court lifted the ban on online gambling imposed by the state government.
Dr Anbumani Ramadoss said the state government did not change the law even after the court suggested the government to enact a law to regulate online gambling.
The PMK leader said the party campaigned tirelessly to enact a law regulating online gambling and submitted several memoranda to the government, but to no avail.
It can be noted that recently a housewife from Tamil Nadu committed suicide after losing a lot in online gambling. The woman, who was chatting with her family, suddenly entered her room and hanged herself to death.
